Project Overview
This project was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding challenge from the start. The clients had recently purchased and completely renovated both the interior as well as the exterior of the building to a very high standard and in a very contemporary style.
Two of the key considerations in this project were connecting the design to the architecture and ensuring that it reflects the personal taste of the clients.
Garden Design Brief
Although the house had been completed, the garden remained untouched by the original occupants. To achieve the design brief and to connect the design clearly to the architecture of the building, terraces needed to be created.
Our garden designers aimed not only to create individual sections within the garden to achieve the design brief, but also to add additional interest. One such area is the secret Sri Lankan Garden which reflects something of the experience of the clients from their time living and working in Sri Lanka.
An additional aim of this project was not only to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing garden, but to create something that offered greater visual impact the further one travelled up each floor of the three-story building.
Paving, Decking And Turfing
We used a range of materials from composite decking connecting the interior of the house to the immediate exterior. We laid gravel paths using Chard Flint, Indian buff Sandstone steps and around the BBQ terrace area, as well as lawn laid to turf and synthetic grass for the ball games area.
We sourced a contemporary style summer house and created a hardwood timber terrace for it away from the house and positioning it to take advantage of the spectacular view.
Fencing And Planting Beds
We then enclosed the entire garden with horizontal cladding in fence panels of western red cedar to emphasise the contemporary feel of the space.
We created a series of terraced raised planting beds to delineate all the distinct areas, with low-maintenance, contemporary-style planting suited to this coastal area. We then created a wildflower sloped meadow in the remainder of the space.
