Project Overview
This garden design project presented a very different set of design opportunities and challenges, including significant access issues.
Set within a coastal context, the aim was to create a modern, contemporary yet curvilinear garden, one that felt organic and connected to its seaside surroundings while maintaining a sense of modern sophistication. The natural topography of the site lent itself to a flowing layout, and we aimed for the circular garden design to echo the rhythm of the coast itself.
Design Brief
- A modern, contemporary, curvilinear design
- Separate lawn
- Coastal maintenance planting
- Paths and access
- Stone terrace for entertaining
Indian Sandstone Paving
We used honed Indian sandstone paving throughout the main terrace areas, chosen for its soft tones and smooth, tactile surface. The material’s warm variation in colour blends beautifully with the surrounding landscape and coastal light, while its honed finish lends a contemporary refinement.
The terrace provides a generous space for outdoor dining and entertaining, connecting seamlessly to the house through gently curving paths that lead to the separate lawn area.
Coastal Planting Scheme
The planting scheme emphasises coastal resilience and texture, using a palette of drought-tolerant species, grasses, pittosporum, hebes, and flowering perennials, to create a natural rhythm that moves with the wind. These plantings bring movement and softness to the curving paths, while ensuring year-round interest with minimal maintenance.
The circular garden design layout also ensures easy access throughout, with pathways designed to subtly guide the eye and movement across the space.
Circular Garden Design
The final composition balances structure with flow; the curvilinear sandstone terraces and paths feel fluid and welcoming, while the restrained planting keeps the design modern and uncluttered.
The result is a calm, contemporary coastal garden that feels both sculptural and organic, perfectly suited to its Sidmouth setting.
